Market Recap and Commentary

August was a difficult month for the major indexes, with the S&P falling 4.2%, bringing its YTD return to down over 16%. Looks like investors are once again coming to terms with the fact that the Federal Reserve Board has no choice but to continue its current path of tightening until they get inflation under control.  A few slightly positive, or at least slightly less negative reports do not mean the FED will pivot.

We continue to believe the market has more work to do on the downside and will, in our opinion, make new lows before we see new highs. We have said multiple times in the last few months that we believe we are in a bear market and as such, would expect multiple rallies before we see true capitulation.

There is no polite way to say it: the world is a dumpster fire at the moment. Europe is suffering astronomical fuel and utility prices, record heat and droughts, as well as inflation and a slowing economy. The real estate market in China is collapsing under its own weight and the CCPs' attempts to support it seemed doomed to fail. Russia and Ukraine are still fully engaged in conflict with both sides enduring terrible losses. Globally, there are growing concerns over food and supply shortages.

Back here at home, American consumers are struggling to stretch their budgets to meet the rising costs of everything. Companies in the US are still hard-pressed to find enough workers, putting pressure on wages. Rising wages are fueling more inflation, which is obviously not helping the FED’s inflation battle.

Our educated guess is that we are in a recession that will continue through most of 2023, bringing asset prices (equities, real estate, etc.,) closer to their historical means. This would suggest a market bottom in the next few months, about 6 months ahead of a possible economic recovery.

Performance and Trading Update

Horse Cove Partners Absolute Return Strategy composite was up at 0.32% net of fees.

August was chock full of bear market activity with strong, fast rallies and quick devastating reversals.  We were able to navigate those waters without major damage. Unfortunately, this led to lower-than-normal returns for us for the month. We feel the volatility ahead will lead to outsized premiums in the months ahead, and plan to take full advantage of it.

Horse Cove Partners was founded by Sam DeKinder and Kevin Ellis in January of 2013 with the commitment to help grow the client’s assets with a highly disciplined investment strategy, replicated weekly, to extract absolute returns from the market by trading short volatility option spreads. The firm was launched after more than two years of trading experience with personal assets that began in December 2010. The firm is built on the strength of hedge fund trading expertise developed beginning in 2002.“We do not believe we are smarter than the market, nor can we time the market in any given week or month. As a result, we take an investment approach similar to an insurance company in that our investment strategy focuses on the probability of success and the management of risk. We believe that it is possible to realize positive returns through a disciplined focus on the risk of each trade with a weekly investment horizon, and accepting intelligent losses when risk events occur.”

We thank you for your continued support.

The strategies reflect the deduction of advisory fees and any other expenses that a client would have paid or actually paid. The S&P 500 Index is used for comparative purposes only. The volatility of an index is materially different from that of the model portfolio. The S&P 500 refers to the Standard and Poor's 500 Index which is a capitalization-weighted index of 500 stocks. The index is designed to measure the performance of the broad domestic stock market. The VIX (CBOE volatility index) is the ticker symbol for the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) Volatility Index, which shows the market's expectation of 30-day volatility. It is constructed using the implied volatilities of a wide range of S&P 500 index options. This volatility is meant to be forward-looking and is calculated from both calls and puts. The VIX is a widely used measure of market risk and is often referred to as the "investor fear gauge."  Investors cannot invest directly in an index. An index does not charge management fees or brokerage expenses, and no such fees or expenses were deducted from the performance shown. Options trading entails a high level of risk. The models do not include the reinvestment of dividends and capital gains because options don't pay dividends.
